Cohesive Finite Element Modeling of Mouse Bone Fracture

چکیده
INTRODUCTION A fracture mechanics based approach has been recently proposed to measure the changes in fracture toughness of small animal bones due to aging, disease, and treatments for osteoporosis [1-3]. In contrast to standard strength tests, such tests require a smaller sample size [2] and provide a measure of material level changes [2,3]. Here we present a complementary computational approach that can predict the fracture behavior and damage evolution at the whole bone level.

Finite-element simulation of firearm injury to the human cranium
An advanced physics-based simulation of firearms injury to the human cranium is presented, modeling by finite elements the collision of a firearm projectile into a human parietal bone. The space-discretized equations of motion are explicitly integrated in time with Newmark’s time-stepping algorithm. The impact of the projectile on the skull, as well as the collisions between flying fragments, a...
متن کاملA Cohesive Zone Model for Crack Growth Simulation in AISI 304 Steel
Stable ductile crack growth in 3 mm thick AISI 304 stainless steel specimens has been investigated experimentally and numerically. Multi-linear Isotropic Hardening method coupled with the Von-Mises yield criterion was adopted for modeling elasto-plastic behavior of the material. Mode-I CT fracture specimens have been tested to generate experimental load-displacement-crack growth data during sta...
متن کاملCohesive Modeling of Propagating Cracks in Homogeneous and Functionally Graded Composites
This paper presents a Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) approach for investigating dynamic crack propagation in homogeneous and Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs). The failure criterion is incorporated in the CZM using both a finite cohesive strength and work to fracture in the material description. A novel CZM for FGMs is explored and incorporated into a finite element framework. The material gradat...

متن کاملCohesive Zone Modeling of Mode I Fracture in Adhesive Bonded Joints
This paper deals with the application of Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) concepts to study mode I fracture in adhesive bonded joints. In particular, an intrinsic piece-wise linear cohesive surface relation is used in order to model fracture in a pre-cracked bonded Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) specimen. Finite element implementation of the CZM is accomplished by means of the user element (UEL) feature...
